Faculty AI Guide : AI Ethics

AI Ethics

AI Ethics

Ethics surrounding the use of artificial intelligence touch on more issues than just academic integrity. Ethics for the use of generative AI involve:

  • how it is being used,
  • data privacy,
  • copyright issues,
  • human rights,
  • equal access,
  • latent bias,
  • the impact that AI data storage has on our environment.

This is a growing topic that is being discussed and studied and will continue to evolve as our society becomes more involved with AI.  In this section, you will find links to resources surrounding all aspects of AI ethics.

Students have no guidelines or guardrails for AI use! Educators and librarians may be the only authority that students enounter on the ethics of AI!

  • AI can be used supportively by students to:

    • help brainstorm ideas,
    • create study guides and note cards,
    • creat project timelines,
    • search for articles,
    • help with accomodations for disabilities.
  • Students may not perceive the use of generative AI to proofread their work and make editorial suggestions that completely alter the document as violating the CCM Academic Conduct policy.
  • Some students may assume that generative AI is an authoritative source and cite it for their assignment.
  • Confusing the matter further for students is that AI can be used as part of an assignment in some technology subjects and may even be a part of the future for a career in that particular field.
  • Students may not be aware of the impact AI has on the environment.

It is important that a student knows up front what can and cannot be done with the assistance of AI for their assignments.

It is recommended, and currently seen as a best practice, to have all aspects of using generative AI for a college course outlined and communicated in the syllabus and on the electronic learning management system (Blackboard).

Doing so provides:

  • clear guidelines on what type of AI can be used.
  • clear guidelines on how AI can be used.
  • clear expectations for assignments in relation to AI use.

Keep in mind that certain database vendors have started to use AI assistants and Natural Language Processing for searches (outlined in AI Tools for Research).

Detecting an AI Completed Assignment

It is getting more challenging to detect  AI written assignments.  A student can feed samples of their writing to AI so that the AI model knows how to generate a piece of writing with the student's voice and style. Tools that detect AI are looking for canned expressions and phrases used in other sources.  If the AI model changes these to suit the student's voice, it may be undetectable.

Below are some AI tools that are being marketed to as AI detection tools. Please note that these links are being provided for informational purposes only and the tools have not been evaluated by the CCM Librarians.
